HAYDN, MOZART – CARTELLIERI!

The year 2027 opens with a concert by the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by György Vashegyi. The evening promises musical delight for Debrecen’s discerning audience, featuring works by two Viennese masters and a lesser-known contemporary. The program begins with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony in C major, K. 338, a rarely performed piece. It then moves to Mozart’s popular Concerto in C major for Flute and Harp, composed during his Paris visit at the request of a family and now a staple for both instruments. After intermission, the mood shifts to the more intense C minor with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 52, which reveals unexpected depth beneath his usual wit. The concert concludes with Antonio Casimir Cartellieri’s Symphony in E-flat major, a work by a nearly forgotten contemporary of Beethoven with ties to Vienna. Cartellieri, son of an Italian and a Lithuanian-German opera singer, was born in Poland and wrote numerous operas, symphonies, and vocal and orchestral pieces. Thanks to Vashegyi and the Orfeo Orchestra, Hungarian audiences are rediscovering his music. Join us to explore two fascinating eras around the turn of the century!
